Ways to serve mint Greek yogurt sauce
This refreshing sauce is a perfect accompaniment for savory dishes, especially those inspired by Mediterranean cuisine.
I always have made this sauce specifically for lamb chops. But after we had the sauce leftovers stored for about one week in the fridge, I tried it with baked salmon fillets, baked chicken kebabs, air fryer frozen shrimp and our chicken and feta meatballs. And it paired wonderfully with all three dishes.
You can even drizzle it over grilled vegetables, serve it as a dipping sauce for crispy falafels and pita bread, add it to Mediterranean wraps, or even use it as a salad dressing.
Ingredients
Below is the detailed information about the recipe ingredients. Please, scroll down to the printable recipe card at the end of this post to find the ingredients quantities.
- Greek yogurt: I used 5% fat plain Fage brand yogurt. It has perfect consistency and taste. You can use other Greek yogurt brands. Ensure it is full fat or at least 5% fat yogurt.
- Mint: you will need fresh mint leaves. I usually find them in the produce section alongside other fresh herbs like basil and cilantro.
- Garlic: I like to use just a little bit of garlic, about 1 small clove. But you can add more to your taste.
- Lemon: I always have a few lemons in the fridge and prefer fresh lemon juice for all my recipes. You can also use lime juice as well.
- Salt and pepper: add at the end to taste.
How to make it
Step 1. Wash and pat dry mint leaves. Chop the mint very finely. Using a cheese grater, grate garlic clove. You can also use a knife to mince it.
Step 2. In a medium mixing bowl, add Greek yogurt, chopped mint, grated garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Stir it until well combined. Transfer the sauce to a jar or an airtight container, and refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Recipe tips
- Dice and grate the ingredients finely: this way, the sauce will be creamier and more flavorful. I prefer grated garlic, so it does not taste as strong in the sauce.
- Use full-fat Greek yogurt: full-fat yogurt will make the sauce creamier and richer. Low fat is a little too water and sour for this sauce.
- Chill Before Serving: it is optional, but I like to refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes. It becomes more flavorful.
Frequently asked questions
Mint Greek yogurt sauce can last for about 4 to 7 days if stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and if made with fresh ingredients.
Yes, you can use coconut or other non-dairy yogurt to make the sauce. Ensure it is unflavored and unsweetened.
Fresh mint will provide the best flavor and texture for the sauce. But if you cannot find fresh mint, you can use dried mint leaves. When using dried mint, use only about ¼-1/2 teaspoons as the dried herbs are more potent.
