    Rich Homemade Hot Cocoa

    Published: Jun 4, 2022 · Modified: Jun 14, 2026 by Nataliia Savchenko

    Jump to Recipe

Rich homemade hot cocoa to enjoy during a cold season or all year round. Comes together in 10 minutes, made with simple ingredients.

Overhead shot of a cup filled with hot chocolate. The chocolate looks frothy on top with some small bubbles.

    Ingredients

    • Drinking Chocolate: I used paleo friendly "Numi" drinking chocolate. It contains 65% dark chocolate and small amount of coconut sugar. It is crumbled real dark chocolate that makes the richest hot cocoa. You can use regular non-sweetened good quality cacao powder.
    • Milk: Quality plant-based milk or full fat cows milk is a key to preparing a creamy and rich hot chocolate.
    • Salt (optional): just a pinch of salt to bring up the chocolate taste and flavor.
    • Sugar: I used coconut sugar, but you can also use granulated sure. Sometimes, plant base milks and cacao powders can be sweetened so make sure to check the ingredients. My drinkable chocolate mix already had some added sugar, but I needed a little bit more for a sweeter taste.

    How to make it

    • First, measure the milk and pour it into a small saucepan. Heating it on low heat until hot but not boiling.
    • Add drinkable chocolate mix or cacao powder, coconut sugar, and salt.
Collage of two images showing first the milk being poured into the saucepan and then, the chocolate added to the milk. The saucepan is on top of the stove.
    • Use a whisk to mix everything until the chocolate and sugar melt. Continue to stir over low-medium heat until it becomes steamy hot. Do not boil.

    • Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite cup. Enjoy as it is or with some whip cream on top.

    Recommended kitchen tools

You will need a small saucepan, a whisk, some measuring spoons, and a cup.

You probably can make it in a microwave, but I strongly recommend using the stove-top method.

    Tips for success

    • Use a good quality drinkable dark chocolate or cacao powder.
    • For frothy hot cocoa, whisk more vigorously before pouring it into the cup.
    • Use a low-medium heat stirring frequently until it hot.
    • Add a pinch of salt for a fuller chocolate flavor.

    Recipe variations

    • Orange: add a teaspoon of orange zest and few Tablespoons of orange juice. For even more orange flavor, use Lindt orange chocolate.
    • Mexican Spicy: add ¼ teaspoon of chili powder, pinch of cayenne and pinch of nutmeg to the saucepan.
    • Turmeric: adding turmeric will turn your hot chocolate into even heartier drink. Start with adding ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of black pepper to the saucepan.
Close up overhead shot showing the top of the cup filled with rich dark cacao.
