Air Fryer Chicken Sausage With Peppers and Onions

Published: Mar 12, 2024 by Nataliia

    Jump to Recipe

Ready in just 15 minutes, including prep time, this air fryer chicken sausage recipe is one of my favorite and easiest dishes to make. The chicken sausage comes out juicy, and the vegetables are perfectly charred with a slight crunch.

Cooked chicken sausage rounds with sliced onions, red and yellow bell peppers in air fryer basket.

As someone, who cooks 2-3 times a day, I often use my air fryer to make a quick dinner after a long day.

I always keep unopened packages of chicken sausage for this reason. It lasts for a few months if unopened, which is very convenient.

We have tried this recipe with feta and spinach, roasted garlic Asiago, mild Italian, mushroom Parmesan and apple sausages.

My personal favorites have always been feta and spinach.

Most of the chicken sausages will have natural pork casing. If for some reason you prefer to avoid pork, I have found a delicious chicken sausage without any casing, specifically the Bilinski's brand from Whole Foods.

Oh, and for this particular recipe, ensure you are using fully-cooked chicken sausage. And if you have raw chicken sausage, I explain how to cook it as well later in this post.

Browned chicken sausage with perfectly cooked bell peppers and onions, all garnished with chopped fresh dill, served on a white plate.

    Recipe highlights

    • Cooked all together: no need to cook vegetables and sausages separately, the air fryer cooks them both evenly and perfectly at the same time.
    • Very customizable: here, you can use different types of sausage, and change up the seasonings. If you do not like peppers, use zucchini or green beans instead.
    • Quick: 5 minutes of hands-on prepping and 10 minutes of cooking to have this main dish ready for the entire family.
    • Great meal prep: divide it between the containers with a portion of rice or pasta, to have an easy lunch throughout the week.

    Ingredients needed

You can find the full printable card with the ingredient quantities at the bottom of this post.

Recipe ingredients on a white background labeled as chicken sausage, dill, olive oil, bell peppers, paprika, garlic powder, onion.
    • Chicken sausage: for this recipe, I used fully cooked chicken sausage links with mushrooms. You can also use turkey sausages instead.
    • Bell peppers: I used one yellow and one orange.
    • Onion: I used half of the yellow onion. If you like more, use the whole one.
    • Olive oil: I used extra virgin olive oil, you can also use avocado oil.
    • Seasonings: I did not add any extra salt because sausage has enough of it for my taste. So I only used garlic powder, paprika, and a little bit of black pepper. If you need, add extra salt to season the vegetables.
    • Fresh dill: it's only my preference, but I love adding some fresh chopped dill to the dish after it is ready. You can skip it or use parsley instead.

How to air fry chicken sausages

Besides the detailed directions, I have included images for each recipe step.

Thinly sliced onions, bell peppers and sausage in a large glass bowl with a spoon in it.

Step 1. Slice the sausage into ¼-1/4 inch rounds. You can also slice it diagonally. Slice the bell peppers and onion thinly. Place sliced sausage and vegetables into a large bowl. Add olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, and black peppers. Toss to coat.

The split picture with uncooked vegetables and sausage in air fryer basket on the left, and already cooked dish on the right.

Step 2. Place chicken sausage and vegetables into a preheated to 390 degrees F air fryer basket. As you can see from the picture, it all does not have to be in one single layer, and ingredients may overlap. Air fry for 10 minutes, stirring it halfway through. If you like the vegetables to be more soft, add 2 more minutes. Sprinkle with some fresh dill on top and it is ready to serve.

    Recipe tips and variations

    • Shake or stir: halfway through the cooking time, do not forget to shake or stir the ingredients, so they cook evenly.
    • Store and reheat: keep leftover sausages in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. You can reheat it in the microwave or air fryer until heated through.
    • Make it spicy: add here sliced jalapeno pepper or about ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
    • Use different vegetables: you can make this dish with potatoes, zucchini, green beans, or mushrooms.

    Ways to serve

You can serve chicken sausage with rice or pasta dishes like Mediterranean rice or Italian pasta with peas.

Or enjoy it with simple mashed potatoes or roasted sweet potatoes.

Back at home, we often ate sausages with buckwheat kasha. I always recommend trying it, as a great alternative to rice.

    Using uncooked chicken sausage

For this recipe, I used pre-cooked sausages. You can find the information about whether it is raw or cooked on the package. If you have uncooked sausage, follow these simple steps below:

Spray the air fryer basket with a cooking spray. Add sliced uncooked sausage and air fry it at 390°F for about 10-12 minutes or until fully cooked, flipping it once halfway through the cooking time. The sausage is fully cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Remove the sausage and place it in a clean bowl. Now, add seasoned sliced peppers and onions. Air fry them for 8-10 minutes, shaking the basket once. Once cooked to your liking, add the vegetables to the sausages.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I know when the chicken sausages are done?

Chicken sausages should be golden brown on the outside and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F. It is recommended to use a meat thermometer to ensure they are fully cooked.

What type of chicken sausages should I use for this recipe?

You can use any kind of chicken sausage for this recipe - feta, apples, mushrooms, Parmesan, spicy or mild Italian sausages. Do not forget to adjust the cooking time, depending if the sausage is pre-cooked or raw.

    Equipment

    • Air fryer

    Ingredients

    • 1 package precooked chicken sausage (5 sausages)
    • 1 red bell pepper
    • 1 yellow bell pepper
    • ½ medium yellow onion
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • ½ teaspoon paprika
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill, optional for serving

    Instructions

    • Cut the chicken sausages into ½ inch rounds. Slice both bell peppers and ½ onion thinly.
    • In a large bowl, add sliced sausage, peppers and onions. Add 2 tablespoon olive oil, ½ teaspoon paprika and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder. Toss to coat the ingredients.
    • In a preheated air fryer basket, add the sausage and vegetables. Air fryer for 10 minutes, giving it a sit or shake half way through the cooking time. If you like the veggies more browned, cook for another 1-2 minutes.

    Notes

Chicken sausage itself makes the dish perfectly seasoned for my taste. Optionally, you can add extra salt or other seasonings to the veggies.
The ingredients can overlapped but do not overcrowd the basket.  This amount of ingredients was perfectly cooked in Ninja XL air fryer at once.
If you have smaller air fryer, you can cook it in batches.
