Grains
Grains are a big part of our healthy diet. Grains are a great source of energy (complex carbohydrates) and plant-based protein. Grains are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Most people stick to rice, quinoa, and oats forgetting that there are approximately 21 different grains to choose from. I prefer to consume unprocessed whole grains to get the most nutrients. Make a breakfast porridge out of cooked millet instead of instant oatmeal, or swap out white rice for buckwheat. Consuming a wide variety of grains has so many health benefits: may reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes risk, helps digestion and may reduce chronic inflammation. By buying not so “popular” (but better for your health!) grains you also support sustainable farming and small local business.
